Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by excess fatty tissue and/or the enlargement of glandular tissue over the pectoral muscles. It can develop in one or both breasts, often unevenly, due to the hormonal changes associated with puberty. In most cases, the breast tissue naturally reduces over time, however, for a significant percentage of adult men it can remain an issue.

Although rarely discussed, many men suffer from enlarged glandular breast tissue, which can cause embarrassment, undermine confidence and create a variety of intimacy and quality of life challenges.

Causes of Gynecomastia

While gynecomastia can be a harmless condition, it can also be the result of an underlying health problem. Enlarging breast tissue in adulthood is a cause for concern for men, as it may be indicative of a serious underlying health issue. Gynecomastia can be caused by hormonal imbalances as a result of using anabolic steroids, recreational drugs, certain medications, as well as certain medical conditions.

If a man notices any sudden enlargement of his breast tissue, he should seek medical attention from a doctor to rule out any serious conditions prior to investigating cosmetic procedures.

Treating Gynecomastia

The outpatient procedure used to treat gynecomastia involves the removal of excess fat and glandular tissue, either through liposuction or surgical removal via a small incision in the nipple areolar complex.

The procedure can be performed under general or local anesthesia, taking anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending on the specific procedure required. Following gynecomastia surgery, it is recommended that patients wear a compression garment for two weeks.

The final results of your surgery will take some time – anywhere from 4 to 12 months – to be fully realized because the skin needs time to adjust and settle into its new contours. Scar quality will also improve over time as the incisions heal and the skin regenerates.
