The goal of a labiaplasty procedure is to remove the excess tissue and mucosa in the genital labia minora for aesthetic purposes, or for issues that many women have when engaging in a variety of physical activities, including sexual intercourse. Here are some of the techniques that we offer in the clinic.

Wedge resection

The wedge resection technique decreases the prominence and hyperpigmentation of the labia minora (inner labia) by removing a wedge from each side. Dark pigmentation can also be removed, if centrally located, however, if the hyperpigmentation is along the entire length of the labia minora then a labia reduction may be necessary.

Trim technique

The trim procedure makes it possible to equalize the length of an asymmetric labia minora and make it as symmetrical as possible. This technique also removes the unwanted colour from the borders of the labia minora.

Wedge resection with extension

Chosen by most patients, this wedge procedure modifies the excess clitoral hood tissue and spreads forward on either side. The clitoral hood reduction incision camouflages itself in the fold already present between the labia minora and majora.

Wedge resection with posterior release

Some patients have posterior communication between their two labia minora. The anatomy of each patient must be evaluated and in some cases the posterior part needs to be released through a small incision to prevent discomfort during sex.

Labia majora reduction

The labia majora (outer labia) can be reduced through different techniques, such as fat grafting, direct resection, or radiofrequency. Direct excision is done by camouflaging the scar in the fold between the labia minora and labia majora in an elliptical fashion. This procedure can sometimes be combined with labiaplasty, with some additional recovery time required.

The term ‘labiaplasty,” refers to external vaginal surgery or nymphoplasty, which is sometimes called “vaginal rejuvenation surgery,” however, this general term covers several different procedures. They seek to reduce or reorganize the tissue covering the clitoris and the vaginal opening to better define the inner lips through various techniques.

What is the recovery time associated with a labiaplasty?

Most women tolerate this cosmetic surgery procedure very well under local anesthetic topical cream (no need for general anesthesia) followed by local infiltration, listening to music for entertainment during the procedure, which lasts approximately one hour.

Most women are back to their daily activities within 3 to 5 days while recovering from a labiaplasty. The first 2-3 days are the more painful part of the healing process, but discomfort is easily managed with over the counter pain medication. It is important to avoid exercise for 2 for the first two weeks, while sexual activity and tampon insertion should be avoided for 4-6 weeks.

Usually, the incisions heal quickly and leave very inconspicuous scars. Post-operatively, you will receive a document indicating exactly what to do and what not to do.
